The Boodles National Gallery Collection - Play of Light | Boodles

A play of light is what jewellery is all about. The subtle shimmer of stones, the soft lustre of pearls and the delicate sheen of gold and platinum. This collection is inspired by the play of light used throughout some of the world’s most famous Impressionist Masterpieces.

Play of Light

A 'play of light' is what makes jewellery so special. The subtle shimmer of stones, the soft lustre of pearls and the delicate sheen of gold and platinum. This collection is inspired by the play of light used throughout some of the world’s most famous Impressionist Masterpieces.

The suites in this collection take their inspiration from a number of different paintings, all of which are found at the National Gallery. The tones of Monet’s Water-Lilies, Setting Sun, about 1907, are reflected in our multi-gemstone collar and earrings, evoking an experimental approach to capturing the modulations of light as it transforms water. Boodles designers also responded to the distinctive zigzag pattern on the water’s surface in Lake Keitele, 1905 by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, now mirrored by rows of marquise cut diamonds. Bars of diamonds and sapphires reflect the bold dabs of colours found in Seurat’s The Morning Walk, 1885. Whereas Pierre-August Renoir’s Moulin Huet Bay, Guernsey, about 1883 –with its bright sea blues and lemony sparkles were the impetus behind the corresponding bangle, pendant, ring and earrings.

“When you go out to paint, try to forget what objects you have before you, a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you…”

Claude Monet

Perspective
Giovanni Antonio Canal – ‘Canaletto’–was famed for his vedute, or views of the city, and renowned for his skill at perspective. The pieces in this collection mirror his architectural style and the use of reflection in his works.
Motherhood
The theme of motherhood also runs through some of the Gallery paintings. Throughout centuries this is a subject matter that never wavers, and we’ve taken inspiration from this sense of continuity for this collection.
Brushstrokes
One of the joys of visiting the National Gallery in person is the opportunity to get up really close to a masterpiece, you’re often struck by the shape of the brushstrokes. This collection is inspired by the swish of the brush by artists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh.
